D.1. General Information about Program

Hacettepe University Department of Nuclear Engineering is the first and only undergraduate program in the field of nuclear engineering in our country. When it was founded in 1977, only graduate education was offered; in 1982, the undergraduate program was initiated.

The mission of the department is: to raise individuals who are equipped with knowledge, vision, skills and universal values necessary to contribute to all areas of science and technology; to promote development of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, in a safe and environmental manner in our country and in the world.

The language of education is English. Students who cannot pass the English-Proficiency exam must attend the preparatory school for at least one semester.

There is a 'radiation detection and measurement laboratory' (located in the building of Physics Engineering) and a 'thermal-fluid laboratory' (located in the building of Mechanical Engineering), which are primarily used for courses in the curriculum and for research activities when required.

The department has a High Performance Parallel Computing System [16 nodes, 100 cores (300 GFlops)]. Because a considerable part of the educational and research activities carried out in the department require 'fast computing capability', the computing system mentioned bears great importance and is almost continuously in use. The capacity of the system is gradually increased by virtue of projects conducted by the members of our department.

In order to have our students gain practical experience in nuclear sites and applications, internship opportunities at the Çekmece Nuclear Research and Training Center of the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority and/or at the Triga Mark II Reactor of Istanbul Technical University - Energy Institute are made available.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

High school diploma is required for admission to this program. The score of MF-4 in LYS (Undergraduate Placement Examination) is taken into account for accepting students to this program (http://www.osym.gov.tr).

International students who graduated from high schools equivalent to Turkish high schools and satisfy the requirements can apply to undergraduate education programs at Hacettepe University. To earn a Bachelor of Science degree in nuclear engineering, one should; (1) succeed in all required courses (163 ECTS credits) in the curriculum, (2) gain at least 51 and at most 65 ECTS credits in “within-field elective courses” from among elective courses (77 ECTS credits in total), at least 30 ECTS credits in NEM-coded courses from among within-field electives, and at least 10 ECTS credits in “outside-field elective courses” offered by the Faculties of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Letters, Law, and Communication, and (3) complete a total of at least 240 ECTS credits with a Grade Point Average of at least 2.00 (over 4.00).

Students are allowed to take a course as "within-field elective" on the approval of their advisor.

Two internships (first in a fossil-fueled plant, second in a nuclear facility or research center), to be done during the second and third years of education, are included in the minimum total load of 240 ECTS credits.

Transfer of a student who received undergraduate education in Turkey or abroad to the undergraduate program of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and recognition of her/his prior learning are handled on the basis of Articles 8, 9 and 10 in Hacettepe University Regulations on Undergraduate Education and Examination. To graduate students as individuals who: have sufficient knowledge and computational experience in the fields of nuclear engineering and nuclear sciences; know how to utilize their knowledge and experience, together with modern techniques and engineering tools, in order to solve problems related to nuclear energy; can use nuclear processes effectively for benefit of the public in applications connected to energy generation, medical science, industry, and environment; are aware of their occupational and ethical responsibilities; have grasped the importance of lifelong learning; renew themselves constantly following advancements in science and technology.

Our graduates are employed mainly by Turkish Atomic Energy Authority and its associated research centers, Electricity Generation and Transmission Companies, and Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources; in addition, to a considerably lesser extent, by Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council and its associated research centers, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, University Techno-polis Companies, Energy Market Regulatory Authority, oncology and imaging centers as engineers and researchers. Besides, a considerable number of our graduates work as academics at universities.

A significant number of our graduates have gone abroad for graduate study. Many reputable universities worldwide (mostly in the U.S.) accept our graduates with necessary qualifications as research and/or teaching assistants. Some of our graduates who have received graduate degrees abroad have been working for leading international companies, research facilities and institutions.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Total ECTS credit from the required courses is 163; this number is 68 % of the overall ECTS credit (240) required for graduation. Total ECTS credit from within-field and outside-field elective courses is 77, which is 32 % of the overall total.

Among the elective courses, at least 51 and at most 65 ECTS credits should be taken from “within-field elective courses”; among “within-field elective courses”, at least 30 ECTS credits should be completed from NEM-coded courses. A course not listed in the "within-field elective" can also be counted as a "within-field elective" upon the approval of the advisor based on the written petition of the student.

From among “outside-field elective courses”, at least 10 ECTS credits should be taken from the Faculties of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Letters, Law, and Communication.

“Turkish Language”, “Usage of Basic Information and Communication Technologies”, and “History of Turkish Revolution and Principles of Atatürk” courses (a total of 10 ECTS credits, 5 courses) are the “common required courses” of the University.

While outside-field elective courses take place in the program as of the first semester, within-field elective courses can be taken beginning from the third semester.

Of the required courses, except NEM251, none has a prerequisite. However, students are expected to take courses in the order as shown in the curriculum; any request to go out of that order cannot be accepted, except for special cases.

There are many within-field elective courses with prerequisites to guide students.

The program does not include any courses taught on annual basis. Of the courses in the curriculum, especially Engineering Project courses, laboratory courses and those including project assignments are intended for applications.

While, in the courses during the first and second years, fundamental knowledge is conveyed to students; during the third and fourth years, the aim is to equip students with knowledge, skills and abilities in the field of nuclear engineering. In addition, beginning from the third year, the program allows students to focus on areas of their own interests, by doing research, application, projects etc.
